CASA M&M’S

M&M’S HOUSE
Complete renovation of a flat located in a listed building constructed in 1919. In the historic centre of Murcia a welcoming old city in south eastern Spain. The building is located in the Plaza de la Cruz square opposite the cathedral tower, within an emblematic part of the city.
The flat was purchased in its original state without having suffered hardly any modifications over the years. Hydraulic tile floors and high ceilings were the first elements which could be discerned and which had to be taken into account. In general the flat was in a state of complete disrepair as it had not been lived in or maintained for over 30 years.
A young growing family will move into the finished home and their main priority is to enjoy to a maximum their free time together in the same space, meaning that the living spaces in the renovation were of utmost importance.
The action strategy was clear on first sight of the flat: to create a large open living-dining-kitchen across the entire length of the outside facade by moving the bedrooms to the inside of the building as they are considered rooms of less importance.
During demolition the old construction systems were uncovered which then became the protagonists of our renovation project. The arched ceilings, metallic posts and solid brick surfaces. The soul of this building had spent decades covered beneath layers of plaster.
In terms of finishes, neutral and contemporary materials in large formats and with their own character have been used in a most respectful and sincere way. The old interacts with the new without creating conflict, showing off the best of both eras, erasing all that is unnecessary.
Finally and due to the geometrics of the flat we were able to reduce a considerable part of the enormous corridor. Despite it still remaining long we decided to separate it and grant identity to the entrance to the flat by installing a large mural by the artist Ángela Simón Casanova (www.angelascasanova.es)
